New River

This ancient river has been flowing for over 65 billion years. It drains over acres of watershed known as the Grand Canyon of the East. The scenery is magnificent and more picturesque mountains and West Virginia scenery unfold around every bend. Rafting in West Virginia on the New River is a classic place that provides all the thrills of first-class whitewater rafting in a manageable setting that’s perfect for first timers, families and groups with varied rafting experience. The New River has two distinct sections, the Upper New and the Lower New.
The Upper New River is typically run in single person crafts, called ducks. This section is a favorite of beginners and children, starting in June and rafting until Labor Day. With its variety of family class rapids stretched over 13 miles; children learn the basics of paddling and enjoy the outdoors.
The Lower New section is more adventurous and requires paddlers to be 12 or older. This rafting section is stretched over 15 miles and has over 22 whitewater rapids. This day trip seems to be a favorite of many rafting in West Virginia. Usually taken in a 10 person raft (9 guests plus 1 guide), this trip can also be done in our famous Small Raft Option boats. This section of whitewater begins in the spring and rafts until October. Ask a Whitewater Consultant about your options when making a reservation for rafting in West Virginia.
